I Believe In // Celebrating

Celebrating small and large accomplishments & milestones is something that I strongly believe in. It is easy to become paralyzed by thoughts of inadequacy in a world where we can compare ourselves to anyone we desire in a moment’s click or tap – I’m absolutely guilty of this.

With the ultimate celebration of this past year to commence in just a few hours, here are a few things 2013 brought that I will be reminiscing on with a joyous heart & serious gratitude – celebrating one year of marriage with the man I love oh so much, a new job, seeing a dear friend walk down the aisle, new friends & relationships, trips to Naples, Nashville & New York City, precious time with family, and lastly this blog. To my friends & family, those who may stop by a few times a week or just once  - thank you for reading my slice the internet – a little thought that has turned into a passion. Your support and kind comments make me smile daily.

What are you celebrating tonight?! Cheers to 2013 & bring on 2014!

Weekend Errands

This weekend was fabulous -  just the right mix of productivity and relaxation! On Friday night we saw The Wolf of Wall Street - yes it is long and raunchier then anticipated - but thoroughly enjoyable and pretty hilarious. Did anyone else see it? Thoughts? Saturday consisted of a lazy morning followed by errands and an evening at home catching up on Scandal (the best!) and on Sunday we got to show my sister and her boyfriend the best that Columbus has to offer during their quick stay. Let me tell you, after spending the past 4 weekends in other cities, it felt nothing short of amazing to be home. I'd love to know how your weekend was?!

I Believe In // Saying No

The other day, I was talking with a friend about an upcoming party - trying to figure out who we would see and who wouldn't be able to make it. A mutual friend's attendance was brought up and how she had decided not to come. She wasn't coming because she had a prior commitment or because she was out of town, but instead the week leading up was filled with more then a healthy amount of activity and another engagement would have been too much. I was proud and inspired.

There are so many weeks where I am running from work to one function or another on back-to-back days that by the end of the week I am exhausted and bitter. Of course I want to spend time with friends and be involved, but if it leaves me a grump is it worth it? A few weeks ago I declined to attend a Christmas party on a day we returned from vacation, and as much as I wanted to be there, it felt good. I knew I would have been stressed from being gone all weekend and trying to get my life in order for the week ahead. I realized that in 2014, I want to do a better job of knowing my limits so that I am fully present and engaged wherever I go.

Holiday Wardrobe Essentials // Shorts

clockwise from top left: topical / leather / lace (on sale!) / sequined / embellished / jacquard / lace trim / floral

Yikes. So I learned the last two days that next year I should probably plan my posts for Christmas ahead of time. Opps. The last minute errands and merriment got ahead of me and all plans to post went right out my third-floor apartment window.

On another note - can you believe Christmas is over? I feel like I ran around like a chicken when no head the past week preparing, and now it's over. Definitely experiencing a few post-Christmas blues. Luckily, we still have New Years! While I will be having a low-key New Years visiting our new niece in Alabama, if I was going out I would undoubtedly pull out my faux-leather shorts that I have been living in this past week. I love that they are slightly untraditional for dressy occasions, and with so many options, you can easily find a pair to compliment the perfect NYE top already in your closet. PS- I am loving these jacquard shorts - so good!

Moody Holiday

We kicked off our holiday festivities this weekend with Christmas parties both Friday & Saturday night with friends. On Saturday, my college roommates and I met at a Spanish restaurant to: 1. be obnoxious (this is an understatement, we love each other too much to be calm) and 2. celebrate Christmas. I don't think I have quite shared my burning passion for all things hispanic food yet, but let me tell you I was elated by this backdrop to our festivity as my favorite way to say "Merry Christmas" is "Feliz Navidad!" This night may or may not have included my killer sub-par impression of Bing Crosby's White Christmas (and yes, I was sober - doesn't take much encouragement).

Ah but I digress. For our Spanish Christmas Fete, I decided to take a more moody approach and wear all black, accented only with my newest accessory - the Christmas Crown, which I was having way too much fun with. My dear friend also joined me & made a gold leaf version, similar to the one these ladies sported.

DIY // Christmas Crown

After seeing this beautiful image on TJ's blog over the weekend, I was instantly inspired to create a similar version for the holiday parties that I have coming up. Good news - this is SUPER easy. This is very exciting for me as I have the patience of a 5 year old when it comes to anything crafty - it's a bit of a curse. See instructions below!
materials needed: twine, floral wire, fake cranberries and pine branches. not pictured: seriously strong scissors.  tip - make sure  you get soft pine tree branches, you want to make sure it is comfortable while on your head!
form & cut the twine so it sits comfortably on your head. make sure to keep it loose so there is room for the branches & cranberries!
cut the branches and use the floral wire to attach to the twine. make sure the ends of the floral wire are wrapped tightly around the twine so they don't poke you.
getting there!
cut cranberries into small bunches and use the floral wire to attach - you can add as many or as few as you'd like!
finished product! what do you think - yay or nay?!
ps- sorry for the sub-par picture quality. shooting anything with fake light is the worst. of course, I had every intention of doing this over the weekend during the day, but as they story typically goes, life happened. oops.

In lieu of Wanderlust Wednesday, I'm bringing you two Holiday features today - this post followed by a little holiday DIY later this evening!

As soon as I saw this beautiful skirt on pinterest, I knew it was the perfect inspiration for this little holiday wardrobe essentials series. Whether the jewels are front & center or provide an unexpected pop of fancy, it seems like the perfect addition to any outfit for the season!

PS - if you're on the hunt for an embellished dress, I think this is pretty awesome.

Time Flies

Anyone else feel like this weekend flew by? We made the trip to Pennsylvania to see my little sister perform in the Nutcracker which was followed by an insane amount of food & laughter back at the house with my step-siblings. Then, driving home on Sunday, it dawned on my husband & I that it was our 8 year anniversary from when we started dating - I was sixteen, yikes! Nothing like a relationship the age of a 3rd grader to make you feel old.

I picked up these coated jeans & boots while in New York last weekend and it's safe to say I'm in love. Both are proving to be very versatile and will undoubtedly be a staple of wardrobe through the rest of the winter.

I Believe In // TIme for Myself

During the week, I have made a habit of getting up a little earlier to spend some time by myself in the stillness of the morning, reading and just letting myself think. It dawned on me the other day how important this time is to my days & weeks. While I love interacting with colleagues at work, catching up with friends & spending some good old quality time with my husband, I've found "me" time to be crucial. I've realized it screws my head on straight, and allows me to focus on what is and what I want to be important in my life before I leave my house and enter into the distraction that is the everyday grind.

Oh, and I also consider it equally as important to have moments by yourself when you can rock-out to your favorite music sans any judgement for dance moves or signing voice.

Has anyone ever traveled by themselves? I've heard from a few that it's awesome, but don't know if I could do it! Thoughts?!

Wanderlust Wednesday // NYC Travel Guide

Caution: by no means am I claiming to be a travel expert or stating that this list is the best of the best. All I can tell you is that we had one of the best weekends in New York City, and below is what we did/eat/experienced. Enjoy!

1) Bryant Park - we stumbled upon Bryant Park while exploring the first night our trip and it was magical - it's a smaller version of the tree and ice rink at Rockfeller Center, surrounded by local shops & eateries.
2) Radio City Christmas Spectacular - yes, it is as cheesy and amazing as it sounds. If you are going to be in New York around Christmas time, you might as well consider it a must-do! What better to get you in the Christmas spirit then Santa Claus, the Rockettes, & a live nativity scene?
3) Central Park - we spent a brisk chilly morning walking through the park, and it was my absolute favorite memory of our entire trip. Even when the trees are bare, the park is gorgeous and bustling with activities - from runners to carriage tours and street performers, it was just as charming as I had imagined.

1) Dough - a speciality doughnut shop, tucked into Brooklyn that serves up fluffy, homemade treats in decadent flavors. My favorite was the Dulce de Leche doughnut!
2) Los Americanos - we stopped in for lunch while in Tribeca and were not disappointed! Both my husband and I got their tacos (his: barbacoa hers: fish) and they were delish! - double plus, it's reasonably priced.
3) The Smith - any restaurant that is decked out in subway tile is a winner in my book. Luckily, this restaurant had amazing food too. We got the Blue Cheese Fondue potato chips to start - so dang good.
4) The Bar Room - tucked away on the Upper East Side close to 5th Ave, it had wonderful food & yummy drinks - highlighted by a fantastic, intimate atmosphere. I also remember their music to be on point, a big win.
5) Sarabeth's - we stopped here before strolling through Central Park and had for a wonderful brunch. It's a cute diner-esque eatery located close the the park & 5th avenue.

Holiday Wardrobe Essentials // Winter White

White is hands-down my favorite color. When out shopping, I have to make a conscious effort to pick up items in other colors or else my entire closet would begin to mirror that of the abominable snowman.  A since I haven't been invited to any of P.Diddy's white parties lately (do those still exist?!) it's rare that I'm able to wear white to celebratory event wear I wouldn't be matching the bride.

Enter the holidays - in my opinion, the perfect excuse to breakout a head to toe white look. There are so many beautiful options like this goregous cape or loving this jacket to match the quilted skirt - they would be so fun paired together!

Let me know how you're planning to wear all-white this season!

Confetti Chronicles: New York City

Despite the rain and chilly temperatures, this weekend in New York City was perfect. I'm planning to share a full travel recap Wednesday, but until then here's a little compilation of our trip!

Clockwise from top left: observing some skating in central park, leftover confetti from past celebrations, beautiful views during our brisk central park walk, Bergdorf Goodman's dressed up for the holidays, the Rockettes in the Christmas Spectacular (it lived up to it's name!), wreaths outside of The Plaza Hotel, Bryant Park at night.

I Believe In // Savoring Every Moment

It was a sobering moment this week when my husband and I attended a funeral for one of his friends from college. From a distance, I witnessed the grave sadness that an unexpected death brought to his family and friends, and I was reminded in such a real way that no day on this earth is promised. And while I am convinced that a much better existence has been prepared for us from a loving God, it doesn't dull the stinging pain of a loss.

While this time of year has a tendency to stressful and at times burdensome, I have resolved to enjoy all aspects of every day - both the good and bad. It is a gift to be on this earth, spending time with those we love, and I hope to savor it.

Wanderlust Wednesday // Toronto

It's funny to me that when I think of visiting other countries, my mind immediately goes to Europe or a tropical destination. I quickly forget about the countries that boarder the United States. And while I've been to Mexico for our honeymoon and a few other vacations, I've only spent a few hours in Canada to see Niagara Falls when I was young. With this recent realization, I'm definitely adding the friendly country up north to my travel to-do list.

Has anyone traveled to Toronto? What are some must-do's?

Holiday Wardrobe Essentials // Emerald

clockwise from top left: shimmer sweater / brocade dress / earrings / jeans / croc tote / beaded dress / suede heels

What better to wear to all holiday activities this year then the season's signature color, emerald - or green for those who don't appreciate the fluff. In case you need additional justification for adding some lovely emerald to your closet, it's also Pantone's 2013 color of the year, so you better celebrate while there is still time left. I'd pair these pieces with sparkly gold, a pop of bright pink, and of course, a deep red.

Are you planning to wear any emerald this season?

Secret Agent

It probably comes as no surprise to you that I almost made a habit of missing outfit photos due to the beyond early sunsets that accompany winter. Luckily, we made it out the door with just enough time to spare to snap a few photos - which explains why I didn't have enough time to remedy the fact that I look like I'm on a secret mission.

Happy Cyber Monday! Is everyone surviving this shopping marathon of a weekend? I've already spent way too much time browsing every possible website I can think of. Opps. Luckily, the bank account still remains intact. If you're looking for a compilation of all things sale - check out the round-ups by Ali and Sally & Molly.

Wanderlust Wednesday // Going Home

casual: ruby studs / floral top / denim leggings (on sale!) / ballet flats

Sometimes the best place to travel destination is home. We're headed to my Dad's in Pennsylvania early Thursday morning (gotta arrive in time for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade!) and I couldn't be more excited - quality time with family topped off with some amazing food - doesn't get much better.

I had an epiphany the other day when I realized that the legging is the MVP of Thanksgiving dressing -  sure skirts and dresses are great but I need something that is going to give when I house my weight in food. Lucky for us, there are no shortage of options out there - which means whether you're having a casual or glamorous celebration, you're covered.

Holiday Wardrobe Essentials // All that Shines

While a little shine and sparkle may be reserved for special occasions for most of the year, the holiday season seems like the perfect time to bust out a all the glitter, sequins and shimmer you have hidden in your closet. With so many great options, it is easy to find something for an office work party (pair these leggings with a black blazer & heel), celebration with friends, or christmas day with the family. I personally can't get enough of Madewell's shimmer collection, everything is amazing!

Are you planning to add a little extra shine this season? I'd love to know how!

In the Tundra

Here's a little 'behind the scenes' information if you will - I was freezing in these pictures. Remember when I said I was ready for winter? Well I lied. I'm ready for winter if it means a low of 40 degrees.  Unfortunately, I don't live the land of temperate weather, I live in Ohio and winter means 20 degrees with my worst enemy - windchill. Yuck.

But, I digress. Back to the outfit at hand. I got this leather jacket a couple of weeks ago and I'm in love. A leather jacket was on the top of my list for fall, and I couldn't be happier with this one. It is perfectly structured with great details - and surpisingly warm when used as a winter coat for a night out. In full disclosure, not pictured: a chunky scarf, hat, and gloves.

I Believe In // Making Christmas Lists

Here's a quick fact about me - I love making lists. To-do lists, grocery lists, you name it. The best kind of list in my opinion though, is one that catalogs activities and events for celebration! So while I am fortunate enough to be able to send my lovely mother a list of a few things I'm lusting after, I thought I'd take a different approach and write down my must-do's for this holiday season:

1. Skate under the Rockefeller tree during our trip to New York in a few weeks
2. Spend an entire day decorating our apartment for Christmas
3. Watch White Christmas (best holiday movie!) as much as humanly possible
4. Perfect my Bing Crosby impresssion
5. Try a new Christmas Cookie recipe
6. Visit our local zoo's Christmas Light display
7. Find the most hideous Christmas sweater for multiple parties we have lined up
8. Handmake a few Christmas presents
9. Start a new tradition - maybe breakfast Christmas morning?!
10. Let those I care about know I love them

I'd love to know, what's on your holiday to-do list?!

Wanderlust Wednesday // Vermont

I don't know if it's because I've grudgingly come to terms with the fact that I won't be seeing much of the sun until April or that I've secretly set my alarm to a Christmas music station (sneaking it in!), but I (think) I'm ready for winter.

And when I say I'm ready for winter, I really mean I'm ready for more excuses to have lazy nights cuddled up in a blanket watching movies or binging on episodes of Scandal (starting watching Sunday & already my favorite show of all time - or a close second behind Laguna Beach). For some reason, when I think of a cozy winter vacation, I instantly think of Vermont. I image snow-covered woods with  old red barns, sleigh rides, and crisp air - sounds perfect, no?

Holiday Wardrobe Essentials: Tulle Skirt

tulle skirts clockwise from top left: blushmidilayeredmaxi
pair with: plaidsequinedembellished

Okay, so "essential" may be overdoing it. Obviously you will survive without a tulle skirt for the holidays, but we're bringing on the drama over here.

When I think of dressing for the holidays, my mind immediately goes to ultra-girly pieces that perhaps would seem out of place any other time of the year. While I think tulle has play outside of the holidays, I think it is the perfect excuse to branch out from a typical skirt - all in the name of celebration & cheer!

I feel like tulle can be so verstile, and I love the idea of pairing a skirt with everything from plaid to sequins! I think this tartan print would be fun too!

Looking for a few more options - loving tulle skirts from lofturban outfitters, & anthropologie
