A Cold Weather Favorite

I know, I know, I'm wearing these jeans again. Here's the thing though, it is still cold. Cold enough to produce flurries on Saturday, which prompted my Flordian sister-in-law who was visiting to take a video since it was the first snow she had seen all season. Don't worry, on behalf of all of us cold-weather residents I informed her that was quite insulting :)

So as long as mother nature is dishing out her favorite frigid temps over & over,  I figured it was okay to pull out my favorite wardrobe piece again too. At least it's encouraging me to be creative, right?

Sunday Browsing vol. 35

Happy Sunday, all! For me, this week can be summed up in one word: crazy. The first half of the week  brought some seriously long workdays (we've all be there, right?!) and the back half was spent with family who were visiting from the south. I'm keeping it short & sweet today so I can soak up the last few hours with family before they head back to warmer temps.

Here's some links I loved, enjoy!

Season-less Skirt

This skirt is an oldie, and when I first received it as a gift (thanks, mom!) I struggled with how to style it. I paired it with a white top and sandals in the summer (seen here), but beyond that felt stuck for awhile.

Then, on a day of outfit desperation in the middle of winter, I pulled it out from the back of my closet as a wildcard pick and was pleasantly surprised by how well it paired with black tights and sweater. I decided to use Sunday's sudden change to cooler temps as an excuse to wear the outfit one last time before the weather warms up for good.

See what I just did there? Trying real hard to will warm weather into existence.

Sunday Browsing vol. 34

Happy Sunday & first weekend of Spring! I hope it warmed up enough wherever you are this weekend for you to remember that the sun does in fact exist and summer may be on it's way. It was in the 60's here yesterday (holla!) and I swear I felt like a new woman.

I'm keeping it short & sweet today, so I'll leave you with a few links I enjoyed this week:

My Top 5 Go-To Travel Resources

When the husband and I got married, we made a pack to visit one new city every year. We're two years in and so far, so good. We've been fortunate enough to visit New York City (twice!), San Francisco and Washington DC and I'm excited to share that we will be heading to Paris & Barcelona (recommendations welcome!!) in July!

I am a total eager-beaver when it comes to travel, so much so that months before we are even thinking about booking a trip I am scouring for flights, places to stay and things to do. So I thought it would be fun to share my top 5 go-to travel resources.
  • Airbnb - I know I've talked about it before, but I can't recommend Airbnb enough. We use Airbnb for almost all of our travel as it's the best way to stay in the exact location we want without overpaying for a hotel. Personally, I like to look for a place that it is operated like a hotel (i.e. someone doesn't permanently live there, it's used only for Airbnb renters) which you can usually get a feel for after scrolling for a few minutes. Still not convinced? Check out a few places I've saved to my wish list: RomeBarcelonaMadrid & San Francisco
  • Jetsetter - If you can't quite get on board with Airbnb, my recommendation would be to check out Jetsetter. An extension of the designer discount site Gilt, Jetsetter only features boutique hotels that have all been personally reviewed by Jetstetter staff. The best part is, similar to their sister-site, Jetsetter features flash sales on featured hotels. I used this site when I traveled to Portland last Thanksgiving (stayed here) and wasn't disappointed.
  • Hopstop - If possible, I prefer to not rent a car when traveling but instead take public transportation, so that I can  see more of the city and get a more local experience. Most of the time walking from one destination to the next has led us to discover a hidden gem that we never would have noticed otherwise. My favorite app to help me navigate through public transportation is Hopstop. It is extremely user friendly and makes me feel less like tourist when visiting places like New York City.
  • ITA - I'm weirdly obsessed with looking up flights long before it would ever make sense to actually book something, and the ITA app allows me to indulge in my crazy. My favorite feature is that the app allows you to search a range of dates and returns flight prices by day in a graph-like form that is easy to read.
  • Refinery 29 - Perhaps unexpected, but Refinery 29's travel section is on point. While I usually take care of the up-front planning, the husband runs the show once we are actually on vacation, coordinating all of our daily plans. More then once he has told me that the restaurant we are eating at or site we are seeing is a Refinery 29 recommendation. Case in point, I just pinned this article
What are your go-to travel resources, I'd love to know!

Spring Style vol. 1

clockwise from top left: j.crew tee / joe fresh panama hat / j.crew midi skirt / urban outfitters book bag / topshop top / gap bag / h&m skirt / baublebar earrings / madewell ring / topshop jeans / la mer watch / asos heels / madewell bracelet / j.crew shorts

As  temperatures are slowly rise, I've started to think about what I want my wardrobe to look like this spring and noticed a trend from years past. The combination of blogs, Pinterest, and magazines have made me a slight style schizophrenic the last few seasons since I tend to get excited about multiple trends, only to purchase things that are more "middle of the road" and end up with a closet that I feel isn't fully maximized.

Because of this, I thought it would be fun to share a few different looks that are inspiring my spring wardrobe the season. First up is an LA-inspired collection of items that are laid-back, seemingly timeless but still feel relevant and fresh. This is the hallmark of both Jacy & Julie, two of my favorite blog ladies to follow. There is no denying these women are on their style A-game, and have done so by building a collection of classic pieces that can be mixed & matched, paired with delicate jewelry, and completed by effortless styling (hello, half-tuck!).

Borrowed

Sometimes the impending change of season proves to be the most challenging for me in the wardrobe department. Not quite warm enough to pull out my spring & summer clothes that are packed away but sick of my winter wardrobe, I find myself starring at my closet for longer then I care to admit.

This weekend, I cured my wardrobe woes by reaching over to the other side of my closet and borrowing this graphic tee from my husband. The man makes up what I'm clearly lacking in the t-shirt department, so this is likely the beginning of some serious closet sharing.

If you're thinking about doing some borrowing too, just half-tuck in the front and top with a fitted jacket or blazer, and your secret is safe with me.

Sunday Browsing vol. 33

Happy (sunny!!) Sunday! After back to back weekends jam-packed with all kinds of goodness, I spent this weekend basking in the bliss of a few agenda-free days. The husband and I did manage to come this close to booking an summer adventure, just a few more details to finalize & I can't wait to share! Cross your fingers all will be sorted out so I can share later this week.

In the meantime, here are a few links I loved this week, what were some of your faves?!

3 Seasons // Shorts

spring: j.crew button-down /  fossil clutch / urban outfitters hat / forever 21 flats (under $25!)
summer: zara vest / madden girl heels / baublebar cuff / asks sunglasses / nordstrom clutch / baublebar ear cuff
fall: j.crew turtleneck / zara jacket / kelsi dagger bucket bag / report booties

With daylight savings behind us and warmer temps ahead, my semi-annual closet clean-out is rapidly approaching. The husband and I share closet space (I know, big sacrifice) so we have to be pretty diligent about removing & donating items that we didn't wear after each season.

One piece of clothing that will undoubtedly make the cut are my leather shorts (last seen here) that seems to be relevant no matter the season. Easily paired with tights in colder months and a breezy tank in the summer, they are a season-less staple in my closet. I have no doubt that these adorable shorts from topshop would just as easily carry you across multiple months. Also, how amazing are those forever 21 flats?!

Blue Suede Shoes

In the middle of schlepping to and from work in ugg boots just to change into my favorite pair of booties, I forgot that shoes that don't require socks actually existed. Or at least I almost forgot.

A few weeks back during a quick trip to madewell I spotted these blue suede heels and instantly fell in love. Not only do they fit like a gem, but their black & blue color-blocking gives me an excuse to pair  them with just about everything I own. Oh, and did I mention they're on sale? #holla. Needless to say, yesterday's 40 degree temperatures seemed like the perfect excuse to bust these bad boys out.

Sunday Browsing vol. 32

Happy Daylight Savings Time! I'm admittedly more excited about "springing forward" then I should be, but can you blame me when the word spring is involved?! I felt like I new woman when I was greeted by above freezing temperatures & sunshine this morning for my starbucks run. A pool & margarita are in our future, I can just feel it!

Too soon? Maybe, but this sunshine has me all kinds of excited.

Hosting a Stress-Free Shower

One of my absolute favorite parts of growing up is getting to watch my friends as they move through different life stages - finding a job, marriage, babies - you get the idea. Luckily for me, I'm at the age in life where all of these things are happening at once, and there is always something to celebrate.

What does this mean? I've hosted and attended a serious number of showers. Now, I'm no expert, but over the past 4 years I've learned a thing or two (usually the hard way) about hosting a shower where both the guests & the guest of honor enjoy themselves. A few friends and threw a baby shower for on of my best friends this past weekend, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to share my 5 tips for hosting a stress-free (or at least stress-reduced) shower.
  • find & create a vision - In my opinion, it's always better to have vision or themed established, especially if you are co-hosting with a friend. This way, everyone is marching toward the same goal and tension of napkins and plates not matching is avoided.  Here's where pinterest is your BFF.
  • know your limits - in the same breath as pintertest being your BFF, it can also be your worst enemy. Let's face it, most showers that we drool over online cost a serious amount of money & likely involve a professional. Ain't nobody got time (or money) for that. Set both time & budget limits to work within your means.
  • know your guest of honor - this might come as a no brainer, but sometimes your idea of the perfect shower might not be the same as your guest of honor, and let's no forget it is supposed to be about them. While some people may love classic baby shower games, our momma-to-be wasn't a fan, so we opted for a simple craft in the form of baby headbands.
  • make it easy on yourself - similar to knowing your limits, take a step back and ask how you can make your responsibilities easier on yourself. You don't have to spend 40 hours on every detail, trust me. Here's where I highly recommend implementing a "bar" of some form. It requires little pre-work and they are almost always well-recieved. We included a grilled cheese bar (pictures below!) last weekend, it was beyond easy and everyone seemed to be a fan!
  • save money where you can - it's no secret that showers can get expensive fast. Get a little creative and save money in small ways (it will add up!) by repurposing things you already own. For example, this past weekend we used mason jars a few of my friends already owned for drinking glasses instead of paying $10 for a pack of 70 disposable ones. Also, save the receipts for everything so you can return what you overbuy.
what are some of your tips for a stress-free shower?

Distractions aren't always bad, especially when they come in the form of For Love & Lemons latest lookbook, pacific getaway

Productivity came a a screeching halt a few weeks back when I received an e-mail linking to For Love & Lemons latest collection. I couldn't stop myself from scrolling through all of the insanely gorgeous pictures that instantly made me wish I was adventuring in the tropics (who doesn't?!) wearing hoop earrings (never thought I would say that) and sipping something amazing from a coconut. Seriously take a look and tell me you don't feel the same.

Of course I fell in love with everything in the collection, but my bank account didn't. Therefore I did my best to round up a few pieces inspired by the lookbook's beautiful display of intricate lace placement, cheeky prints and tropical florals.

Sunday Browsing vol. 32

Happy Sunday & first day of March! I hope the view outside your window is similar to the one above instead of the snow-covered tundra that I'm currently looking at. Remind me why I thought it was a good idea to not book a beach vacation in the winter? Clearly this girl doesn't learn from her mistakes.

Whether you're on the beach or in Antarctica (literally & figuratively, of course) here are a few links that I loved this week to keep you company.
  • to decoraterugs for under $300 - finally. This girl is ballin' (& decorating) on a budget.
  • to wear: i'm head over heels for liz's pink & red combination
  • to enjoythese sketches depicting the 2015 Oscars are a fun little treat.
  • to shop (sale)ASOS is offering up to 60% off select spring merchandise.
  • to eat: one of my fave food bloggers just posted a recipe for butternut tabbouleh that I instantly pinned.
  • to drink: I followed this recipe for pomegranate champagne punch for a friend's baby shower this weekend, favorable reviews were given!
